Message from Dr. Lisa Williams, Clinical Psychologist Chelsea & Westminster Burns Centre, and Coordinator of the London Burns Survivor Support Group

I am sure many of you have been shocked and saddened about the awful events at Grenfell Tower and some of you may be feeling upset and traumatised by the coverage.

It comes on the back of a number of other awful events which we can feel helpless witnesses to even though we may not have been there or directly affected.

Please look after yourselves at this time and remember you don't have to keep watching or reading about it.

Do talk about it with others if it helps you process it but not if it traumatises you.

Try to focus on the kindness of strangers and the outpouring of humanity rather than the imagined horror or terror.

It is my strong belief that there is far more good than bad in this world, even if it does not often feel that way and that we human beings are incredibly resilient and can survive even the most awful life events.

Our sincere thanks to our friends at Changing Faces, who have kindly agreed to host us at their offices in central London for our Support Group Meetings. This venue offers a chance to meet with others in a relaxed environment away from the Hospital or a noisy pub. As always the main aim is to provide a space in the London area to meet and socialise with people who have experienced some form of burn injury either directly or indirectly.

I would be very grateful if you could RSVP for the meetings so that I know roughly how many people to expect, can cater accordingly and provide a guest list to Changing Faces.

You are always welcome even if you do not have a chance to inform us in advance.

Please call me on 020 3315 2504 or email lmwilliams@nhs.net to confirm or if you have any questions.

Changing Faces is based at The Squire Centre, 33-37 University St, (just off Tottenham Court Road) London WC1E 6JN. The closest tube stations are Euston, Warren Street and Euston Square.

For more info see their Changing Faces and for directions click here.

I really hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you there.

McIndore Burns Support Group : Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Dedicated telephone no: 07732 295310 – always someone available to talk to in daylight hours.

The McIndoe Burns Support Group runs group meetings 3 times a year in the Surgeon Mess, a relaxed function room at the Queen Victoria Hospital.

Occasionally we meet outside the Hospital, such as a recent visit to Pizza Express, for pizza making, which was really great fun, and we are always open to suggestions for what to do next!

The Group is designed for people who have been through the trauma of a burn, are looking for a bit of fun and an informal opportunity to meet up with people who have been through similar experiences.

Next meetings are:

Friday, November 18, 2016, from 11:00 to 14:00

Friday, March 31, 2017, from 11:00 to 14:00

Please feel free to bring family members or a friend. if you would like someone to come with you.

We are also happy to subsidise travel expenses, if this is an issue.

Please RSVP for the meetings so that we have a rough estimate of how many to expect and can cater for.
