DFFB Burn Survivor Weekend away 2024

Dan’s Fund For Burns hosted our third Adult Burn Survivor (25 yrs and older) Weekend on 13-15 September 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle.  We had 40 attendees in total, 32 of whom were burn survivors.

Activities were similar to the previous weekends with the event kicking off with an ice-breaker quiz night on Friday, Saturday offered morning yoga, a bus tour around the city of Newcastle, talks on laser surgery, use of LPG in burns rehabilitation and skin camouflage from members of the Royal Victoria Hospital Newcastle burns team and then an open microphone session where burn survivors could share their stories if they wanted to.  Attendees were also able to book into one hour scar therapy massages compliments of Restore Therapy and the evening offered a dinner and DJ.  Sunday morning, there was a swim session and a debrief before saying our goodbyes and everyone heading home.

These in-person peer support weekend events are invaluable to burn survivors who join.  From our feedback they love meeting other burn survivors to connect, share stories, tips on burn care, feel comfortable showing their burns and being with others who ‘get it’ and can relate to living with a burn injury.  Everyone said they would recommend it to other burn survivors.
